Gadd was under 18 when he started his career performing at clubs in London. He played balled and early rock standards at two I’s and the Laconda-type venues. A film producer, Robert Hartford-Davis, spotted him and got a big break. Robert Hartford-Davis secured a recording session with Decca Records for him. He used the “Paul Raven” stage name and released his debut single, “Alone in the Night,” in January 1960. In 1961, he signed on to Parlophone Records and worked with record producer George Martin.
