Former PM Imran Khan to Run for Chancellor of Oxford University

Former PM of Pakistan, Imran Khan,  decided to run for the post of chancellor of the University of Oxford. He is currently in jail in Rawalpindi.

A British newspaper reported on 24 July, and the Telegraph said Khan “will enter an online ballot despite serving a 10-year jail sentence.”

Since August 2023, Khan has had various legal cases against him.Cypher cases and Toshakhana cases are also included in those different cases.

 Imran Khan showed interest in the chancellor position at the prestigious University of Oxford from Adiala jail. Different international social media platforms spread this news, referencing Imran Khan’s adviser on global media, Syed Zulfi Bukhari. Imran Khan has decided to apply for the world’s most regarded academic positions. Here, we will explain Imran Khan’s association with Oxford University and why he is applying for the post.Syed Zulfi Bukhari said in an interview with a British media that:

“ Imran Khan will contest for the Chancellor of Oxford University as there is a public demand that he should contest.”

Here at Oxford University, the chancellor’s vacancy is open, as 80-year-old Lord Patten, former governor of Hong Kong and Tory Party chairman, resigned from this position after 21 years. He was earlier a member of Parliament from the conservative party. He was appointed as the governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997. In 2006, he was appointed Co-Chair of the UK-India Round Table, established to forge closer ties.

According to reports, it will be the first time the elections for the chancellor will be conducted online, unlike the conventional process in which the graduates are required to vote in full academic dress.

Candidate must fulfil the following rules;

  1. A very successful and outstanding achievement in their field and the ability to command respect beyond it.
  2. The ability and willingness to enhance the university’s reputation locally, nationally, and abroad.
  3. A deep appreciation for the university’s reach and academic mission, global community, and ambition to remain a world-class research and teaching university.

The chancellor is elected by a conference selected by all Former students of the university who are admitted to a degree.

Another body that votes in the elections is called the Congregation. This is the university’s parliament, which has over 5000 members, including academic staff, heads, and other members of governing bodies of the college, senior research, computing, library, and administrative staff.

Oxford University describes the Chancellor’s role as a ceremonial head, especially as an eminent public figure elected for life, presiding over all major ceremonies. 

The election process for the new chancellor will be conducted online for the 1st Time, allowing the University’s 350000 Strong conference to participate. The electorate comprises approximately 250,000 eligible voters, including alums and the University of Oxford staff.

Imran Khan and three other participants applied for the Voice chancellor vacancy. Imran Khan, Elisha Angiolini, Theresa May and Johnson.

If Imran Khan is selected for this position, it will not be his first experience as chancellor. He previously served as the Chancellor of Bradford University from 2005 to 2014.

Imran Khan obtained a Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) degree from Keble College at the University of Oxford.

Boris Johnson is a politician and writer. He was the UK’s PM and the Conservative Party’s leader from 2019 to 2022. He also served as a member of Parliament.

Theresa May was also the PM of the UK from 2016 to 2019. Now, she is one of the Oxford University VC candidates.

Elish Angiolini is a lawyer. She currently serves as Lord Clerk Register. She has worked at the University of Oxford since 2012 and is considered a potential candidate for the 2024 VC election.

   Zulfi  also revealed that;

“We will announce it publicly once we get Khan’s go-ahead and start the signature combine.”
