Wright entered the world of professional football somewhat late. Despite his teenage trials at Southend United and Brighton & Hove Albion. He failed to collect enough attention to receive an offer for a professional contract.

He returned to playing football for non-league and amateur teams after losing hope in his ability to play professionally. Wright’s wife was expecting their first child during a period of extreme poverty, and he spent time for 32 days at Chelmsford Prison for not paying fines for driving without insurance or taxes. He remembers crying and swearing to God that he would do everything in his ability to succeed as a football player after being trapped in jail.

Starting Career with Club

Wright loved several London clubs when he was younger. In his memoirs, he says that Millwall was “the first football team I fell in love with”. After that, he “genuinely had loved West Ham” ever since he was a small child, with their uniform being the first one he had picked up. As a personal friend of Arsenal icon David Rocastle, he also had an early link to the club.

As a teenager and up until the age of 21, Wright was the leading scorer in the London and Kent Border Sunday League. That happened while playing for the amateur Sunday league team Ten-em-Bee, located in Lewisham. His sons Brett and Shaun later joined the same team. Greenwich Borough, a semi-professional team, signed Wright in 1985, paying him £30 a week.

Crystal Palace

After Wright’s six or seven games at Greenwich, a scout from Crystal Palace noticed Wright’s game. Ian thanks to a tip from Billy Smith, the manager of Dulwich Hamlet, was called to Selhurst Park for a trial. Three months shy of turning twenty-two, in August 1985, he signed a professional deal with Palace after making an impression on then-manager Steve Coppell. The agreed fee was a set of weightlifting equipment.

In his debut season, he made an immediate impression, finishing as Palace’s second-highest scorer with nine goals. Following Mark Bright’s arrival at Palace the following year, the two quickly developed a productive striking partnership, and their goals were a major factor in the club’s 1989 playoff return to the top division. With 24 goals in the Second Division and 33 goals overall in all competitions, Wright was very helpful that year.

Throughout six seasons, Wright made 253 starts, 24 substitute appearances, and scored 117 goals for The Eagles in all competitions. This made him the club’s third-best all-time goal scorer and its record post-war goalscorer. He was voted into their Centenary XI and awarded their “Player of the Century” title in 2005.

Wright disclosed that teammate Jim Cannon tormented him until Cannon left the squad in 1988. During a training session, Wright told Coppell about his encounters with Cannon, which included Cannon scolding him for consuming food shared by the group. Cannon “two-foot jumping [Wright]” in the back when Wright outscored Cannon.

Arsenal

Wright’s 29 league goals (24 for Arsenal, 5 for Palace) were sufficient to make him the league’s top scorer. As of 2016–17, only Wright and Teddy Sheringham have led the top-flight scoring charts having scored for two clubs during the relevant season.

Wright scored in all but the championship game of Arsenal’s 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup runners-up campaign and freely in the Premier League. However, the club was going through a rough patch after manager George Graham was fired for making illegal payments. Under interim manager Stewart Houston, they were only able to finish in 12th place in the league.
